Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy reacted to news that after five months Hillary Clinton has finally agreed to turn over her private email server to the Justice Department by saying, “it’s about damn time.”

The South Carolina congressman is the chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, a group that has been urging Clinton to turn over her emails since the news broke in March that she had used a private email address for official State Department business.

Gowdy also said it’s unlikely that Clinton “decided” to turn over her emails; she probably didn’t have a choice in the matter.

“I can’t help but smile at the notion that someone is voluntarily turning something over to the FBI,” Gowdy said in an interview with CNN. “They generally don’t ask. They generally tell you to do so, and I doubt very seriously that they ‘asked’ her to turn her server over. If they have jurisdiction, they don’t need to ask; they just go get it.”

It was recently confirmed that at least two of the emails that went through Clinton’s private server did contain “top secret” information. These messages were discovered out of a small sampling of Clinton’s emails reviewed by the inspector general of the intelligence community.

The issue might be hurting her in the polls. According to a recent Quinnipiac University poll, 57 percent of voters said they do not view Clinton as “honest and trustworthy.”
