Failure to vote on border bill sparks Congressional poetry slam

He’s a poet, and you didn’t even know it.

After the House of Representatives on Thursday cancelled a vote on an emergency aid package for the southwest border,  Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) took to rhyme to express his frustration with the alleged catalyst of the cancelled vote: Sen. Ted Cruz.

Himes then followed up with a “House of Rep Haiku”:

After a fellow twitterer responded to Himes’ Haiku with a Haiku of her own, Himes tweeted the following:

Cruz (R-TX)is being accused of stirring up GOP opposition to the bill after he held a pizza dinner at his office on Wednesday night for a number of House Republicans. At the dinner, House members voiced complaints with the bill, which would allocate $659 million to remedy the border crisis. Cruz had previously expressed opposition to the emergency aid package because it didn’t address what he sees as the root of the immigration crisis: Obama’s 2012 deferred action program.

In response to the scrapped vote, Cruz “commended” the House, adding that “House Republicans understand that the only way to solve this humanitarian crisis is to make clear that President Obama has no legal authority to grant amnesty.”

Following the house’s immigration stalemate on Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner postponed August recess by a day, calling for an impromptu House meeting on Friday.

With their first day of vacation cancelled along with Thursday’s vote, we can only hope that more congressmen turn their disappointment into witty rhymes.
