Vice President Joe Biden nearly stole the show from President Barack Obama during his State of the Union address, cracking massive grins and jokingly pointing at members of Congress. And on Monday night, new Late Night host Seth Meyers called out the VP for his antics.
Biden, who was billed as the second guest after Meyers’ fellow Saturday Night Live alum Amy Poehler, didn’t face any tough questions during his six-minute interview on the show. Biden fielded queries about his love of trains and the next time he would act alongside Poehler, a reference to the Vice President’s cameo on Parks and Rec. Meyers then whipped out some photos of Biden’s expressive gestures during Obama’s 2014 address to the nation.
“I loved your performance on Parks and Rec, but my favorite performance of yours all year — State of the Union,” Meyers said. “Just killing it at the State of the Union. So many finger guns. If there was an NRA for finger guns, you would be the President.”
The Vice President explained that his grin and finger point were a means of calling out a particular U.S. Senator who was sucking up to the President by standing and applauding often during the State of the Union.
Biden also hinted at a possible run for president in 2016 during his appearance Monday, in response to Meyers’ only political question of the night.
“Well you know, I was planning on making a major announcement tonight,” Biden said. “But I decided tonight’s your night. So I hope you’ll invite me back.”
“Yes, absolutely,” Meyers said. “And Amy, your 2016 plans?”
“Oh, I’m going to run for president,” Poehler said.
