Jon Stewart defends traffic-blocking Ferguson protesters

Jon Stewart defended the Ferguson protesters on his show Wednesday night and made fun of people criticizing the demonstrations spurred across the country by the grand jury decisions in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases.

Specifically, Stewart balked at claims that the protesters’ traffic blocking — which has affected the commutes of individuals in multiple cities — is itself a form of violence.

“How dare these marchers put our streets in some kind of, oh, let’s call it a chokehold of traffic,” Stewart exclaimed, making a clear reference to Eric Garner’s death at the hands of a New York police officer.

“Wouldn’t have anything to do with the streets being black, now, does it?” Stewart added.

The comedian also laughed at assertions that the protests will impede Christmas shoppers and therefore negatively impact holiday business.

“Protesters preventing people from shopping at Macy’s,” said Stewart dramatically. “I hope these shoppers shall overcome.”

Stewart also discussed the multiple professional athletes who have sported “I can’t breathe” t-shirts in their own form of protest.
