Madonna might start losing fans if she keeps campaigning for President Barack Obama at her concerts.
During a New Orleans concert on Saturday night, the singer told the audience she didn’t “care who you vote for as long as you vote for Obama,” a comment that drew boos from concertgoers, according to the Associated Press. Some members of the crowd even walked out of the auditorium. Madonna backtracked on her remarks shortly thereafter, adding, “Seriously, I don’t care who you vote for … Do not take this privilege for granted. Go vote.”
The singer should have known better than to verbalize her feelings for Obama so strongly in a state that has voted Republican in the last three presidential elections and will likely go to Romney in 2012.
Sadly, this is not the only time this month that Madonna has been in the limelight for being out of touch. While in Colorado recently, she upset concertgoers by using a fake gun to “shoot” a masked gunman on stage while images of blood splattering were shown on the screen behind the stage. In light of the movie theater shooting in Aurora, members of the audience expressed disbelief over Madonna’s insensitive song choice, “Gang Bang,” and the display that accompanied it.
It’s not the first time in the last month Madonna’s drawn negative attention to herself regarding Obama, either. During concert in September in Washington, D.C. She told fans to “vote for f***ing Obama” because he is a “black Muslim.” She later backed away from her previous comments and said she was being “ironic” and was aware that Obama is not actually a Muslim.
Madonna should stick to singing when she opens her mouth. For the sake of her career, it is probably a good thing the U.S. presidential election will be over in a little more than a week.
