It’s the question offices hear every Wednesday courtesy of a Geico commercial that hit the airwaves in May: “Guess what day it is? Guess what day it is? Hump Dddayyy!” But teachers at a school in Connecticut aren’t too happy with Geico’s camel and the car insurance company anymore, saying the commercial is disruptive to students’ in the classroom.
According to Connecticut’s WFSB, educators in Vernon, Conn., are sick of students repeating the commercial’s tag line “in a weird voice.” Students and teachers at Vernon Center Middle School report instances of the popular ad’s “Hump Day” punchline being used several times a week, and school officials feel it is disrupting the classroom.
“Everybody’s walking around in the hallways and saying ‘it’s hump day’ in that weird voice,” Brooke Lewis,a student at Vernon Center Middle School, told WFSB.
But students aren’t just mimicking the commercial on Hump Day, either.
“Sometimes it’s the counting down to when it is,” Lewis said.
Some parents agree with the teachers, saying the commercial’s use is getting a little excessive.
“Ok, that’s getting out of hand,” Mick Ruggiero, a parent, said. “Just keep it to Wednesdays and we’ll be all right.”
According to Vernon Center students, school administrators have sought disciplinary action for students who continue their “Hump Day” rhetoric, calling students into the office as a way to nip the problem in the bud, Superintendent Dr. Mary Conway said.
But Ruggiero said that may be going a little far.
“I think it’s all kind of silly. I think there’s bigger things to take care of in middle schools than that,” he said. “Obviously you don’t want the kids to be disruptive.”
