Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on New York City and the surrounding area, but as comedian Adam Sandler pointed out on Wednesday night, the Big Apple has faced and survived numerous other challenges — including Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s large soda ban and former Rep. Anthony Weiner’s embarrassing Twitter mistake.
In a Madison Square Gardens benefit concert performance for the hurricane victims, Sandler gave his own rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” with New York City-centric lyrics. Sandler, accompanied by “Late Show with David Letterman” bandleader Paul Shaffer, sang a NSFW ballad about all the terrible things New York City had survived over the years.
The video of Sandler’s performance has gone viral, and for good reason. While not the best singing exhibition, the lyrics are perfectly targeted to their audience. Even those who aren’t New Yorkers will chuckle when Sandler jabs at Nanny Bloomberg and Weiner.
“The bed bug scare of 2010 / The Lohans getting busted again and again … Trump’s combover always making us sick/ The congressman who tweeted his d**k / The mayor’s ban on 32-ounce Mountain Dew-ya / Hallelujah / Sandy, screw ya / We’ll get through ya / ‘Cause we’re New Yorkers,” Sandler sang.
Making fun of national laughingstocks always plays well. And in the case of Bloomberg and Weiner, they deserve it.
