‘Authentic’ Cherokee group challenges Elizabeth Warren’s ethnic cred

Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic challenger hoping to unseat Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) in November has stirred up quite the controversy with her claim that she is part Cherokee.

A recently formed political group, Cherokees Demand Truth from Elizabeth Warren, has called on Warren to either prove her Native American heritage or to stop making such claims.

The group plans to protest outside the Massachusetts Democratic Convention on June 2.

Warren has admitted that she had identified herself as Native American in the past, but claimed that in doing so she did not in any benefit at her teaching jobs as a result. Warren has been hired to teach at both the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard.

The Cherokee group was formed with the intent of informing people that Warren is not one of them, and that she needs to set the record straight:

Cherokees Demand Truth from Elizabeth Warren is a group of authentic Cherokees and descendants devoted to sharing the truth about our history. Our mission is to help people understand what a real Cherokee is and to show why Elizabeth Warren claiming to be Cherokee without proof is harmful and offensive to us.

Sen. Brown also weighed in on the controversy dogging his opponent, stating:

This Native American controversy is a problem of Elizabeth Warren’s own making. She falsely described herself as a minority, and some of the schools where she worked relied on that information to misrepresent the diversity of their faculty.
