“Oh how the mighty have fallen” could be the phrase to describe the pathetic reception an oft-touted Obama surrogate received this weekend while schilling for him in the battleground state of Nevada. Georgetown law student and newly-discovered women’s rights champion Sandra Fluke only managed to draw a crowd of ten people at a “get out the vote” effort in Nevada this past weekend.
It seems as though the golden girl’s grassroots appeal is wearing off. After a fifteen-minutes-of-fame showing in February for her comments on the floor of the U.S. House advocating for government mandated birth control coverage via insurance plans and then a warm welcome at the Democratic National Convention in August, Fluke just can’t seem to keep up her momentum. At a “Sak ‘n Save” in northern Reno, Fluke encouraged the event’s attendees to get out and vote early.
Problem is, apparently only ten people turned out to hear what she had to say.
“I’m trying to do everything I can for an election that I feel is very important,” Fluke said. “I have a unique opportunity for how I get to do that.” According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, she recently wrapped up reelection campaign stops for the president in Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida.
The Democrats have long accused the Right (i.e. the Tea Party) of manufacturing support by using the clever little phrase of “astroturf” to describe what they believe to be less-than-genuine “grassroots” efforts. But does the Left really have any room to discuss what genuine support truly is, if one of their most popular surrogates is a former law student that they groomed to advocate for Obama, being flown around the country to rally on his behalf?
At least the Democrats weren’t so desperate as to bus in supporters to make Fluke look larger than life, like they had plans to do for President Obama’s 2012 DNC convention at Bank of America stadium, or like they did to rally against the recall election of Governor Scott Walker in Wisconsin.
