Yik Yak data: Trump, Clinton, and Sanders all negatively viewed

Donald Trump has had the most attention on the anonymous messaging app Yik Yak in Iowa, but all that attention isn’t so great.

In the last full week before the February 1 caucus, 76 percent of yaks that mentioned a Republican candidate mentioned Trump, according to Tech Insider.

Almost half of them were “disapproving” of Trump.

Less than a quarter of them could be considered “approving.”

Rand Paul was the Republican candidate with the most positive yaks, though he lagged behind Trump in overall mentions. More than 50 percent of Paul yaks were positive, but only 8 percent of yaks mentioned that mentioned a Republican candidate mentioned him.

Marco Rubio had more approving than disapproving yaks, 35 percent to 20 percent. Ted Cruz had even lower positive yaks than Trump, but fewer negative yaks as well.

For many millennials, Trump struggles to attract support, though Republican-leaning millennials favor him among other candidates.

For Democratic candidates, Bernie Sanders dominated yaks. About 73 percent of yaks that mentioned a Democratic candidate mentioned Sanders, and about 24 percent mentioned Hillary Clinton.

Martin O’Malley, however, had the most positive yaks, though fewer than 4 percent of yaks mentioned him. Both Sanders and Clinton had more negative than positive yaks.

Of all presidential candidate mentions, 41 percent mentioned Trump and 35 percent mentioned Sanders.
