In the words of the immortal Harry Doyle from “Major League:” “Juuust a bit outside, tried the corner and missed.”
The New York Mets broadcaster said part of the same thing after rapper 50 Cent threw a ceremonial first pitch about 20, 25 feet wide. How that’s possible only 60 feet out from home plate is unanswerable.
I mean, just look at this thing.
50, who was wearing a #50 Mets jersey with “Jackson” (his real last name) across the back, was a tremendous sport about the blooper, laughing it off as he descended the pitcher’s mound.
“That was Curtis Jackson — I don’t like it when even comes around,” he later joked in the broadcast booth when asked to describe what went wrong with the pitch. “I don’t even want him around here.”
Fortunately for the Mets, 50 wasn’t responsible for trying to pitch the Mets to victory — that fell to starter Jonathon Niese and the bullpen, which helped lead New York to a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
