Hawaii lawmakers decide not to name beach after President Obama

President Obama is definitely spending too much vacation time on the golf course. Now, the beaches don’t even want him.

According to the Associated Press, two Hawaii lawmakers have backed off their idea to name a beach after Obama.

Last week, Honolulu city councilmen Stanley Chang and Ernie Martin jointly brought forth a resolution to rebrand “Sandy Beach Park” with the name “President Barack Obama Sandy Beach Park.”

However, the proposition crashed like waves on sand.

“Martin says in a statement that he heard historic and cultural sensitivity concerns from the community about the name change,” reports the Associated Press. “He says there may be other public facilities more appropriate to honor the president.”

Apparently, Obama frequented the beach in his youth and even bodysurfed there during 2008 campaign for president. That must not have been enough to overshadow Americans’ clear disapproval of his job as president, though.

Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first instance of Obama losing out on eternalizing his name. Last month, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel walked back on his decision to name a high school after Obama due to “questions and concerns” from locals.

“Over the last few months, my team has listened to questions and concerns from the community, ranging from location of the building to the naming of the school,” Emanuel detailed in a statement. “We take that community input seriously, which is why – as we continue to look for a thoughtful way to honor President Obama – we will look for other possible names for this future school.”
