Perfume company develops signature scent for Virginia Tech

Hey Hokies — take a whiff of this. Perfume company Masik Collegiate Fragrances just announced that Virginia Tech will be the next university for which the company produces a signature scent.

Masik Collegiate Fragrances creates perfumes and colognes solely for colleges and is already available at 11 schools, including the University of North Carolina, Penn State University and the University of Alabama. The company donates a portion of the proceeds to scholarships and athletic funds at the individual schools.

According to the company’s website, signficant thought is placed into each formula before the final concoction is produced. Among the characteristics that help determine what the school’s scent will be are the “school colors, mascot spirit, traditions and history, landmarks and architectural style, campus trees and flowers, mission statements, college town character and themes in the alma mater and fight songs.”

At Auburn University in Alabama, for example, the company wanted to ‘stay true to the Orange and Blue’ and mixed  “watery mandarin, chilled grapefruit, and an iced mineral water accord” of the school. The scent for the University of North Carolina includes a “lychee champagne accord” to bring out the “undeniable allure of Carolina Blue.”

It is still yet to be seen what the elixir for Virginia Tech will be, but last Friday potential Hokie scents were set up in the Virginia Tech University Bookstore for students to sample and vote on. The perfume will be released in August, just in time for students to buy it in advance of the fall semester.

“Well I think it’s a great idea and somebody had a great idea I mean it’s something,”David Wilson, the associate director at the VT Bookstore, told CBS Roanoke. “Virginia Tech is a big brand. There’s lots of merchandise. This is something  that up till now hasn’t been there.”
