Louie Gohmert did not hold back during the House Judiciary Committee hearing regarding the Federal Communications Commission’s new net neutrality regulations.
The Texas representative shouted at FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler for the new rules, which prevent Internet providers from blocking certain websites, selectively slowing traffic and offering “fast lanes” for higher-paying websites.
“You’re playing God with the Internet!” Gohmert exclaimed to Wheeler, according to National Journal.
The fresh net neutrality regulations have proved a point of contention between Democrats and Republicans. While Democrats think they will enable Americans to access any desired online content, Republicans are concerned about them hurting Internet providers and investment.
During Gohmert’s questioning Wednesday, Wheeler told the Texas congressman that the new rules are justified by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
He also insisted that Internet providers would still be somewhat free to explore creative business ideas under the new regulations.
“I would submit to you that something in 1996 had nothing to do with wanting you to take charge of the Internet,” Gohmer responded. “And I would also thank you for your willingness to leave some room for exploratory business models and new business models — that’s really so gracious of you. Because before the FCC stepped in, everybody was able to explore new business models!”
You tell ’em, Louie.
