Pharrell leads ‘hands up’ gesture during Grammy performance

Recording artist and hat model Pharrell led a “hands up” gesture during his Sunday night Grammy Awards performance, immediately prompting viewers to note a connection with the nationwide Ferguson protests last year.

Pharrell’s backup dancers wore dark hooded shirts and slowly raised their hands in unison during a piano interlude in a rearranged version of “Happy.” The movement wasn’t subtle.

The 3 and a half minute performance was more dramatic than the song’s name and typically upbeat harmony and rhythm would suggest. The gesture lasted about 10 seconds.
