If Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee in 2016, it isn’t going to be because Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) stopped fighting against him quietly.
The senator released a statement on Wednesday morning via Facebook that the Republican primary voters should not “elect Gollum.”
For anyone who did not see or read Lord of the Rings, Gollum was a hobbit who became possessed by the One Ring that promised power and eternal life. The creature was hideous looking and often times made disgusting swallowing sound he made with his voice.
Paul said in his statement that Trump is a lot like Gollum in the sense that he is obsessed with gaining power in order to “make America great again,” and that the long standing tradition in America says that power corrupts.
“They wrote the constitution to restrain the accumulation of power by the government,” Paul said in his statement. “Trump is ignorant of this tradition, or worse yet, he is overtly opposed to the limited government tradition.”
He continued about how the goal for Republican primary voters should not be who could grab the ring of power, but instead which candidate would fight big government and guarantee liberty.
“I am the only one on this national stage who really doesn’t want power or dominion over you,” he continued. “I want to set you free, I want to leave you alone, and I want a government so small you can barely see it.”
This isn’t the first time that Trump has been compared to an evil fictional character, The YouTube channel, the Auralnauts compared the billionaire to Darth Vader, and author JK Rowling said he was worse than Lord Voldemort.
