When your reelection campaign is flailing, it’s time to create a video connecting two unrelated points and hope the voters buy it. That seems to be the latest strategy of President Obama’s reelection team in a new video ad that claims President Obama is a “strong leader because he cares about people.”
Nice try, Obama for America, but that isn’t going to fool anyone. In an ad titled “Strong Leader” New Hampshire Governor John Lynch is seen giving an impassioned speech about why President Obama deserves reelection and his vague reasoning boils down to: Obama is just a great guy. Lynch praises the president for his “clear vision for America” as viewers see pictures of the President warmly embracing average Americans – from the elderly to business owners to middle-class families.
“He understands that America should be a place of opportunity for all of our people and not just a few of our people and that is why his strategy for moving our country forward is focused on investing in our workers to grow our economy and our middle class,” Lynch said. The very unspecific talking points fail to highlight what the president’s “strategy” is or what “investing in our workers” looks like.
“President Obama has a clear vision for America and he has the passion, commitment and leadership to get the job done,” Lynch claimed but that “clear vision” isn’t spelled out in the ad. Instead, viewers are to assume his hand-shaking photographs will soften their hearts for a man who has done anything but lead this country.
The president’s reelection team doesn’t have much, if any, room to speak about what “leadership” looks like as President Obama’s presidency has been marked by broken promises about an unemployment rate dipping below six percent in 2012, a lying cover-up of a foreign policy disaster in which four American lives were lost, and an astounding 104 rounds of golf on the books during his first term.
Furthermore, the ad is puzzling because just this week the president had the gall to say that Mitt Romney’s debate performance “wasn’t leadership, that’s salesmanship” and according to the ad, passion and “caring for people” is what makes a strong leader.
It was uncovered that Mitt Romney quietly gave $3 million to charity in 2010 and $4 million in 2011, and has a history of not only financial philanthropy, but time and energy toward his passions and his church. By Obama for America’s own standards, Mitt Romney too is a strong leader, but that contradicts the president’s statement on Monday.
It just goes to show that when there is no tangible record of accomplishments to run on, Obama’s reelection team is trying their hand at the shell game and sadly, they believe the American people will buy it.
