Stephen Colbert thinks it’s time for President Barack Obama to man up and dish out some justice — by executing the loser of the National Thanksgiving Turkey competition, Caramel.
Last Wednesday, Obama pardoned the winner, Popcorn, at the annual White House ceremony. But as the White House made explicitly clear, both turkeys were pardoned. And that fact doesn’t sit well with Colbert, so he’s started a WhiteHouse.gov petition to change it.
On Monday night’s show, the comedian mocked the White House for prioritizing the yearly event — instead of spending more time fixing HealthCare.gov.
“Oh, I understand why HealthCare.gov is screwed,” Colbert exclaimed. “Obama needed his A Team to work on TurkeyCare.blugh! Blugh!” (That’s a turkey gobble impression.)
Colbert ridiculed Caramel for being a second-rate turkey and losing out to the obviously superior Popcorn. But the host was even more upset that our “Coward-in-Chief” didn’t give Caramel the ax he so obviously deserved.
“This is nothing less than the weakening of our democracy,” the comedian said. “Elections have consequences, sir!”
Colbert also announced his petition on WhiteHouse.gov to force the President to “live up to the duties of his office and execute Caramel the turkey.” At the time of this post, only 524 people had signed the petition.
