Could a potato salad, of all things, rally Americans together?

An on-going and hyper-successful Kickstarter campaign  suggests potato salad could break the partisan gridlock.

Zack Danger Brown, the creator of the campaign, is an ardent fan of potato salad, but has never made the side dish himself. He started the Kickstarter on July 2 with a goal of $10 to whip up the dish.

Five days later, the campaign has raised over $8,000 from 1,300 backers. Brown has created numerous stretch goals, a form of rewards for contributors, as the money continues to pile up. When $75 came in, he promised a pizza party (Pizza only, no potato salad). The $300 mark brings better mayonnaise and $1,000 offers a live feed when Brown makes the salad. The latest stretch goal of $3,000 invites the whole internet to a potato salad party. Brace yourselves.

In a midterm election year like 2014, national voter turnout averages around a low 40 percent. Midterm turnout hasn’t surpassed the 50 percent barrier since 1948. It might do politicians well to pay attention to Brown’s successful campaign. Any smart politician would aid their “get out the vote” campaign with offerings of potato salad to potential voters.

It’d be a win-win for democracy.
