Rand Paul headlines event to defund Planned Parenthood

Funding Planned Parenthood has been an issue in Congress, but it’s also affecting young constituents as well.

On Thursday, a group of young people attended a Students for Life of America #WomenBetrayed rally calling for a defunding of Planned Parenthood.

The taxpayer funded organization is the nation’s largest abortion provider, and has been marred by scandal. Such rallies come in light of undercover video evidence alleging that Planned Parenthood is illegally profiting off of the sale of fetal body parts.

It wasn’t just that young people attended the rally. Some of them spoke as well. Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, and Lila Rose, president and founder of Live Action each had a spot on the roster.

Other speaker included GOP candidate Rand Paul, members of Congress, representatives from other pro-life groups, and post-abortive women who felt personally betrayed by Planned Parenthood. Sarah Palin also stopped by.

In his speech, Paul addressed the political process to fund Planned Parenthood is on its supporters, as Breitbart reported:

Some are saying we don’t have enough votes to defund Planned Parenthood. That gets it exactly wrong. You have to fund Planned Parenthood. You have to have 60 votes to affirmatively fund Planned Parenthood, so don’t accept the notion that we have to get to 60. The other side has to get to 60. The other side has to find 60 votes to fund Planned Parenthood…They do not have 60 votes to fund Planned Parenthood as long as we separate the bills and tell them, ‘You go out and find 60 votes to fund Planned Parenthood.’

Paul also denounced comments made by DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. In a conversation the two had about women babies had rights, she claimed “that’s a private matter.” Paul tied such a sentiment into the Planned Parenthood scandal:

When you have Planned Parenthood turning the baby around so they can get access to their organs and sell them, that’s no longer a private matter. And when we have an organization that we are giving taxpayer dollars to, that is no longer a private matter.

The idea of a government shutdown did come up, as pro-lifer say they do not actually want a shutdown. They do want to defund Planned Parenthood though. Paul said if it came to that, “so be it,” and placed the blame on the Democrats:

…If the Democrats want to shut down government, we should point the finger and say, ‘If you want to shut down the government to spend money on harvesting organs of babies, so be it.’ But we should take a stand.

For Paul, taking a stand means “not one penny more for Planned Parenthood.”

The date looms closer to see how Planned Parenthood funding will affect the possibility of a shutdown. Congress has until Oct. 1 to fund the government.
