From New York to California, campus protests broke out across the country this autumn to battle the phantom menace of systematic racism on university campuses.
An organization called the Black Liberation Collective, a group of black students committed to “transforming institutions of higher education through unity, coalition building, direct action and political education” has spearheaded the list of demands on campuses nationwide. BLC claims to represent the demands of student groups on 65 campuses nationwide including University of Missouri, Boston College, Dartmouth University, Harvard University, New York University, Yale University, and UC San Diego.
Nationally, the BLC demanded free tuition for all blacks and American Indians, “a divestment from prisons and an investment in communities, and “that black students and faculty be reflected by the national percentages of their population” (12.3 percent),
Each campus group also had a list of demands that included the removal of deans, cultural competency training for white students, and safe spaces for the delicate flowers to protect themselves from opinions that differ from their own.
The BLC organizing committee consisted of Johnetta Elzie, Deray Mckesson, Samuel Sinyangwe, and Brittany Packnett — millennials who pride themselves on being professional activists.
