Young Republican Congresswoman announces she is expecting first child

In the ultimate act of feminism, sitting Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) has announced on Facebook that she and her husband are expecting their first child.

The 34 year-old-married Republican congresswoman took to Facebook yesterday afternoon to reveal that she and husband Daniel have begun “building our family” and joked that “there will be yet another person in Southwest Washington who will – for their entire adult life – get to explain ‘No, no, it’s pronounced Butler.’”

Beutler wrote that the baby is due in the fall. At the time of this posting, 150 people “liked” the post, and more than 60 had issued well-wishes and congratulations in the form of comments.

Beutler was elected to Washington’s 3rd district in November 2010 at the age of 32 and fought speculation back then about being pregnant.

Pregnant representatives are not something new to the United States Congress, but they aren’t exactly common. Women have served in Congress since 1917 and since then, only eight women representatives have been pregnant during their tenure.

Congratulations to the Beutler family!
