The Danger of Electability: Michele Bachmann CPAC 2012

The term “electability” is repeatedly tossed around during election season in reference to potential presidential candidates. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann has experienced the implications of this through her decreased popularity in comparison to other GOP candidates.

Following the results of the Iowa Caucus, Bachmann announced her withdrawal from the presidential race, stating, “Last night, the people of Iowa spoke with a very clear voice, and so I have decided to stand aside.”

The mother of 23 foster children and former state legislator/tax attorney, Bachmann is serving her third term in Congress, representing Minnesota well. Even after her withdrawal from the race, Bachmann announced at CPAC 2012 that she is still running for another term in Congress because she “wants to be a part of the team; it’s not about a position.”

Many argue that she has accomplished very little during her time in Washington thus far, but this is because the bills she has advocated are simply too conservative for Congress, according to Bachmann. She speaks actively against Obamacare, calling it “the social playground of the Left,” and advocates for traditional, heterosexual family.

She also urges Washington to “stop spending money we don’t have.” She encourages personal responsibility and traditional values because she lives them, unlike many politicians.

Bachmann’s reputation as a truly staunch conservative precedes her at when she addressed the conference about the need for a strong defense of America and our allies. The congresswoman outlined Obama’s different foreign policy success stories, such as the downfall of Gaddhafi and Bin Laden, but asserts that those victories were “tactical successes” to make the American people feel safe by dispelling the names of terrorists they recognize.

The Right has accused Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Ron Paul of being too moderate, but we’re still trying to elect them, unlike Bachmann.

Bachmann’s advice to the young conservatives of this nation is to read. She stresses the importance of being well informed and active in world events to prevent a leftist takeover of this country. Truth cannot die if we fight to keep our Constitution, our dignity, and a traditional view of morality, as ordained by God.

It is important to vote for those who share your values, not who is projected to win or the candidate most likely to win over the Democratic Party. Yes, the worst that could happen would entail a re-election of Obama, but there are more conservatives in this country than it feels like. If we rallied behind who should win instead of who could win, America’s direction and place in this world would completely change.
