Song review: ‘Run Liz Run’ an odious ode to Elizabeth Warren and Woodstock-era folk music

I don’t believe that songwriting has to be profound,” folk legend Steve Earle told Esquire, “but I truly believe that it’s a crime for you to go outta your way for it not to be.”

The artists behind “Run Liz Run” are lawbreakers, then — more felonious than melodious, having committed an offense against music that cannot be expunged or disassociated from the record of Elizabeth Warren.

The song from pro-Warren group “Ready For Warren” goes like this:

Americans want our next president to be a woman

Hey babe, here’s lookin’ at you, Senator Elizabeth Warren

The planet is warming and the power is shifting

We need a leader who won’t stand for all the Wall Street bullsh-t, the lobbyist grifting

(Chorus)

Run run run, run Liz run

You’ve gotta run for the office and get the job done

Run run run, run Liz run

We need

A president, we need President Warren (2x)

And one other thing: “Nobody got rich on their own, not nobody / Everybody needs bridges and streets to succeed.”

I refuse to accommodate this song the PR courtesy of, “Well, they knew it’d generate a lot of interest if it was terrible.” No. Just stop making terrible campaign songs, advertisements, whatever.

Will you please stop?
