President Barack Obama has always been popular with the Hollywood crowd, but at least one of his most vocal champions and heavy donors has changed her mind about the president.
Academy Award-nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal told Time Magazine that she has grown disillusioned with Obama.
“I really believed in him, and I’m not sure what he believes in anymore,” she said.
Records indicate Gyllenhaal donated $5,800 to Obama in 2008 and 2012 cycles combined. She also served as surrogate for him on the campaign trail and talked about her support for him in multiple television interviews.
“Look, I get it, I know. It’s a complicated job. I could never do it. But I hope for a leader who will stand up and be unpopular,” she told Time.
Gyllenhaal first publicly expressed her distaste for his policies when it came to the government’s surveillance program.
The actress, along with actor John Cusack and director Oliver Stone, created a video campaign calling on the president to stop “mass suspicionless surveillance.”
Gyllenhaal might be alone in her feelings for the president. Many of her famous friends have still been hobnobbing with Obama on the high-dollar fundraiser circuit.
