[WATCH] Rapper Nelly believes he shouldn’t have to pay taxes during gov’t shutdown

It’s quite the “Dilemma” for Nelly, as he contemplates whether to pay his federal taxes in light of the current government shutdown.

The rapper told VH1 News that he doesn’t believe he should be responsible for paying taxes if the federal government isn’t even operating to spend the money.

“I’m trying to campaign since the government ain’t working, we shouldn’t have to pay taxes,” he said. “Because you know paying taxes is supposed to pay for the government which, in turn, is not working. So if they’re not working, I shouldn’t have to pay taxes.”

Moreover, despite the “Air Force One” rapper’s success in the music industry, he feels that saving money by not paying taxes is “vital” to his survival.

“And me being in the upper echelon of the tax bracket, feel that the money I could be saving over these next couple of days could be very vital to my survival. That’s how I feel.”

“So ya’ll [Congress] keep banging,” he added.

According to The Daily Caller, Nelly has a net worth of more than $60 million.

The Internal Revenue Service isn’t buying into Nelly’s arguments, however. It recently issued a reminder to Americans who had filed six-month extensions on their 2013 taxes that they must still file their taxes by October 15, regardless of whether the government is open for business.

“The current lapse in federal appropriations does not affect the federal tax law, and all taxpayers should continue to meet their tax obligations as normal,” the reminder reads. “Individuals and businesses should keep filing their tax returns and making deposits with the IRS, as required by law.”
