White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough says Obama ‘shocked’ by Ray Rice domestic violence scandal

Breaking from the discussion about President Obama’s approach to combatting ISIS, NBC host Chuck Todd asked White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough on “Meet the Press” Sunday about Obama’s opinion of the Ray Rice domestic violence scandal.

“We have talked generally about the situation in the NFL, and the president was shocked,” McDonough told Todd.

When the NBC host wondered if the NFL had “handled” the Rice situation correctly by suspending the Baltimore Ravens running back indefinitely from the league, McDonough was careful not to get too specific about Obama’s thoughts on the incident.

“I don’t want to get into characterization of that right now, but I think we all know that Ray Rice being suspended indefinitely seems to be exactly the right thing,” explained McDonough.

Multiple Democratic lawmakers have been less quiet than the president about their opinions of the NFL scandal, including Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is facing a loud chorus calling for his resignation because of the way the league handled the Rice situation.
