DNC Political Director calls Romney a liar in fundraising email

After spending the entire summer trying to walk back a claim by Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter that GOP nominee Mitt Romney is either a liar or a felon, the national Democratic Party is going full steam ahead on accusations that Romney is purposefully deceitful.

In an email sent Tuesday evening, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) asked supporters for financial contributions to combat Romney’s so-called falsehoods. In the email, DNC political director Jeffrey Lerner claims Romney is “a man who has practically made saying things that aren’t true an art form in this campaign.”

The email was sent in response to a comment Romney made Sept. 13 to ABC News George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America that “the President tends to, how shall I say it, to say things that aren’t true.”

Lerner then urged Obama supporters to “make sure the American people know that Mitt Romney and Republicans across the country are deliberately misrepresenting the truth,” citing Medicare, Obama’s jobs plan and Romney’s tax plan as specific areas in which Romney has lied during the past week.

While Lerner did not specify the source of his accusations, it appears he could be referencing a recent Romney campaign ad, which states that 582,000 manufacturing jobs were lost under Obama. In a follow-up advertisement, Stephanie Cutter, deputy campaign manager of Obama for America, noted this loss of jobs occurred within the first few months Obama was in office. “And we were in the depth of a deep, deep recession,” Cutter adds. While this is true, the 500,000 jobs Cutter says the Obama administration has added in the last two and a half years still amount to a net loss of jobs since Obama took office.

The source for Lerner’s accusations about Romney’s tax plan and Medicare are not immediately apparent.

When Obama and Romney face off in their first debate on October 3, the nation will be able to judge for itself which of the presidential candidates deserves the title of Liar-in-Chief. Until then, the Democrats will continue to throw around accusations to distract from the truth.
