While he supports medical marijuana use, Bernie Sanders has never quite come out in favor of recreational marijuana legalization.
But, unlike 2016 rival Hillary, he’s dropping copious hints that he’ll at least support decriminalization.
During a Reddit AMA on Tuesday, Sanders replied to a question about marijuana legalization by saying that, while he served as mayor of Burlington, “police had more important things to do” than arrest marijuana users:
Colorado has led the effort toward legalizing marijuana and I’m going to watch very closely to see the pluses and minuses of what they have done. I will have more to say about this issue within the coming months.
In the past, Sanders has said that recreational legalization “is not one of the major issues facing this country.”
“It’s not that I support it or don’t support it,” he told TIME in 2014. “I think it has a lot of support and I’ll be talking to young people and others about the issues. But there are two sides to a story.”
Meanwhile, Hillary has not even committed to supporting medical marijuana use. “I don’t think we’ve done enough research yet,” she said last year.
