Cleveland has had the busiest and most publicized year since the two Major League movies (we try and forget Major League 3) were filmed. The Cavaliers clinched their first NBA Championship in June, the RNC rolled through town in July, and the Indians look to make the march to the World Series in October.
However, in anticipation for the biggest event of the year in November, Hillary Clinton has found herself a new ally: LeBron James.
In a new op-ed for Business Insider, James relates his endorsement of the former Secretary of State to his mission when first coming back to Cleveland… to bring home a championship, and ultimately to further enrich the Akron, Ohio, community at large. LeBron cites that Hillary “will build on the legacy of my good friend, President Barack Obama.”
However, 65 percent of Americans feel the country is headed in the wrong direction. He also cited Hillary’s commitment “to make sure kids have access to a good education, no matter what zip code they live in. She’ll rebuild schools that are falling apart and put more money into computer science.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has spent much of the summer and fall advocating for school choice, most notably at a Cleveland charter school where he promised $20 billion in federal grants to lower-income students. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, has done an about-face on her and her husband’s support of school choice during the Clinton administration.
The endorsement itself shouldn’t come as a surprise. James has recently come out and advocated for social justice, first at the ESPYs in July with Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Paul (in the wake of the deaths Philando Castile, Alton Sterling, and police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge) and then in a press conference on September 26 in which he stated he would stand for the National Anthem, but supported Colin Kaepernick’s peaceful protest. James also said that it’s a “scary thought” thinking of his son (Prince James of Ohio) getting pulled over by police.
Currently, according to the RealClearPolitics average, Donald Trump is ahead by two points in Ohio over Hillary Clinton. Considering that a LeBron James endorsement of Hillary was likely given his alliance with SJW causes and concern over police brutality/racial bias, and also considering that the popular governor of Ohio and primary foe John Kasich has neither endorsed Trump nor attended the RNC, and Trump still survived all those red flags to take a lead in the Buckeye State, he may just last through the election.
