Stephen Colbert took a few minutes of “The Colbert Report” Wednesday to rejoice in recent photos that surfaced of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un enjoying himself at a lubricant factory.
“If you’re checking the papers and looking at the TVs, there’s just so much sad news out there these days that tonight,” Colbert began the segment, “I’d like to kick things off with a hot shot of pick-me-up from what I like to call Stephen Colbert’s ‘Smile File.'”
The comedian explained that, despite previous evidence of Un’s “constant state of stern disapproval,” the photos of the North Korean leader at the Chonji Lubricant Factory prove that “beneath that sad expression, Kim Jong Un just might be Kim Jong Fun.”
After examining the photo of joyous Kim Jong Un, which was released along with several others by the Korean Central News Agency, Colbert gaped in delight at the leader’s sudden smile.
“I have never seen him — or anyone, really — so transported by the pure joy of lube. Nothing puts a grin on that man’s face like extruded semi-solids,” detailed the comedian.
Colbert deemed it “nice” to watch Un “finally let his hair down.” He reflected on moments during which the leader stared seriously and sternly at a multitude of objects — fruit, accordions, water slides, and “where they threw his uncle’s body” — to express his awe at the photograph from the lube factory.
Colbert even admitted that he himself understands the “simple life-affirming pleasure of lube.” Perhaps that means that he will be the next star — right behind former NBA player Dennis Rodman — to bond with and befriend Kim Jong Un.
“I also enjoy watching nondescript viscous goo being forced through a tube,” explained Colbert. “I mean, I could spend hours at the soft serve pump.”
Coupled with the recent Kim Jong Un dance video, these photos just might change the way you look at the North Korean leader.
