Americans’ support for marijuana legalization has convinced comedian Stephen Colbert that the entire country has ‘gone to pot.’
On ‘The Colbert Report‘ Thursday night, the host lamented the shift in public opinion over the drug. New polling shows that a majority of Americans support weed legalization, for the first time since polling on the issue began.
“Polls show that the majority of Americans now support amnesty for illegal immigrants and marriage for the gays,” Colbert said. “And now we’ve lost another moral battle.”
Colbert then pointed out that the media likens the changing views on marijuana legalization to the shift in gay marriage support. He said pot smokers are soon going to blame their addictions on being ‘born that way’ and demand the right to marry the drug.
The Comedy Central star also called out Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) for saying pot smokers shouldn’t be put in prison. He said other Republicans, like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) shouldn’t follow suit just to appeal to younger voters.
“But it might already be too late [for Rubio],” Colbert said. “Because evidently he’s already got a serious case of cotton mouth.”
