Domino’s Pizza has seen the light and its halibut-hating days are over. In fact, the delivery-pizza-versus-Alaskan-halibut feud seems to have ended in a bizarre bromance between Domino’s CEO Patrick Doyle and Alaska Democratic Sen. and avid fish-defender Mark Begich.
After receiving a present this week from Begich in response to an advertisement belittling the innovative abilities of Alaska’s prized fish, Doyle decidedly didn’t look his gift fish in the mouth. Instead, he grilled it up and had it for lunch Friday.
Thanks again @SenatorBegich…usually it’s pizza for Friday lunch. Today, Alaskan Halibut. It’s “ofishal” – I love it! pic.twitter.com/dvUPquHyvW

And apparently Begich is more than just elated that his peace offering seems to have done the trick. He responded to Doyle’s tweet via Facebook.
“I have to hand it to Domico’s Pizza CEO J. Patrick Doyle. He has a sense of humor and a great taste in shirts,” Begich wrote. “And now we have another fan of Alaska seafood.”
It wasn’t always the case, though, that Domino’s was such an Alaskan seafood connoisseur. After the pizza company’s ‘war on halibut‘ attack ad aired, claiming “no one’s coming up with a world-changing idea over halibut,” Begich rushed to the fish’s defense — that and his constituents who not only eat halibut, but make a living as fish merchants.
“Alaskans are world class skiers, snowboarders, snow-machiners, and hockey players who need halibut-powered energy to compete,” Begich wrote in his letter. “And though we occasionally consume food delivered in a flat cardboard box, we prefer heartier far knowing that a trip to the mailbox may require extra energy to confront an ornery moose or a hungry bear.”
It’s surprising that Begich and Doyle can come together so easily over such a large issue for Alaska. When Wal-Mart and the U.S. National Park Service both opted out of selling Alaskan salmon because it was not certified as “sustainable” by the Marine Stewardship Council in London, Gov. Sean Parnell (R) sent letters to Wal-Mart’s executives.
Watch Domino’s ad below. But be aware halibut-lovers, it gets brutal.
