Democrats have jumped into the odds-making game about their chances of holding the Senate, writing in a weekend fundraising email that it’s an even shot they fail.
“50-50 that we’ll lose,” the subject line of a Democratic plea sent Sunday afternoon reads.
“There are 100 days left in this election, and the GOP has a 50-50 shot to take over the Senate,” the body of the email continues.
The panicked tone of the message is dead-on, but the odds may even be rosy in light of statistical models and predictions about the Democrats’ Senate chances in November. The numbers have trended toward a Republican takeover in recent weeks, with The New York Times now forecasting that the GOP has a 60 percent chance to take control of the upper chamber, and The Washington Post predicting that it’s an even better 89 percent chance.
The current Senate breakdown is 53 Democrats, 45 Republicans, and two independents, both of whom caucus with the Democrats.
