‘Law and Order: SVU’ breathes new life into the Todd Akin “legitimate rape” controversy

Although former Congressman Todd Akin (R-Mo.) is no longer in office, his legacy will live on in American popular culture.

That’s because the 2012 Senate candidate’s “legitimate rape” comments will be featured prominently in this week’s episode of “Law & Order: SVU.”

In the episode, a rape victim  (“The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan) discovers she’s pregnant but decides to keep the baby. The preview for the show (posted below) focuses on the trial of the alleged rapist (David Marciano).

“Ripped from the headlines. Words that set off a national controversy,” the voice over says as a middle-aged man, who was a witness to the rape, says before the court: “It’s nearly impossible for a victim of legitimate rape to become pregnant.”

Let’s just say the two female detectives working the case weren’t too pleased with the witness’ statement.

While Akin was a strong favorite to win the Senate seat before these fateful comments about rape and pregnancy, he eventually lost in a landslide to incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) despite pleas from the leaders of the GOP, including RNC chairman Reince Priebus and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, to drop out.

Unfortunately Akin wasn’t the only senate candidate last fall to venture down this path. Richard Mourdock (R-Ind.) ventured into dangerous territory during a general election debate in late October, saying that pregnancy caused by rape is “something God intended.” The favorite entering the debate, he subsequently lost to now-Senator Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) by six points.

Thanks “SVU” for reminding us that the liberals’ concocted “War on Women” lives on even when it’s no longer an election year.
