Amazingly enough, Anthony Weiner still believes he will win the New York City mayoral race.
During a prerecorded interview with Savannah Guthrie, aired on “Meet The Press” this week, the former New York Congressman didn’t seem too worried about his weak prospects in the Democratic primary.
“I’m convinced that the decision I made was the right one,” said Weiner. “I’m convinced that I’m going to be the next mayor of the city.”
Weiner’s hopefulness comes despite new numbers that show him polling a distant fourth in the Democratic primary, holding only 7 percent of the vote, compared to front-runner Bill De Blasio’s 43 percent.
Though he initially was leading the polls, Weiner’s public support dropped rapidly after new lewd messages between him and a women named Sydney Leathers were leaked online. The timing of messages indicated that Weiner had continued engaging in inappropriate conversations after he had resigned from Congress for accidentally tweeting a photograph of his genitals.
Weiner has since stated that he has put that part of his life behind him, and is focused on his political comeback. He remains convinced that his ideas are best for the NYC middle class, and was confident — almost arrogantly so — when Guthrie asked him if he still had a chance of winning the race.
“Well, look, the answer is yes,” said Weiner. “From the moment go, I was waging this campaign on a bet, and the bet was basically that I know that people have embarrassing things they will hear about me and did know about me in my background, but I also knew that I had the best ideas and I’d be the best mayor for the city.”
He said Guthrie should stop trying to do postmortems on his campaign and should talk to him again after he’s served two terms as Mayor.
The Democratic primary will be held on Sept. 10.
