Maine First Lady Anne LePage is showing she’s just like most Americans, taking a job as a waitress to save up for a Toyota RAV4, Associated Press reported.
In many ways, the LePage family is like the average American, and actually make less on Governor Paul LePage’s salary than the average Maine family earns. While the average married couple makes $87,000 in Maine, LePage is the lowest paid governor in the country, earning $70,000. He hope to change that for his successor, by increasing the salary to $150,000.
LePage’s summer profession as a waitress at McSeagull’s fulfills something she’s “always, always wanted to do,” and says her late mother would be proud she was following her interest. Her daughter, Lauren LePage, worked there last summer earning $28.00 an hour, The Washington Post reported.
Adding to her sense of average Mainer, LePage is one of 10,000 seasonal employees. “It’s a big business in Maine in the summer — particularly on the coast,” Governor LePage said.
LePage is aware of who her husband is, and it’s why she hopes to be able to prove herself. “Because of who I am and who I’m married to, I want to work extra hard just so I can show them I can do the job.”
General manager Jackie Barnicot has already called her “an amazing employee.”
Customers are noticing LePage’s efforts, regardless of their political affiliation. Laurie Green, an unaffiliated voter, loved the example being set. “I really hate a lot of our politicians nowadays that have the wealth, the money. They have no clue what the average person out in the world is doing,” she said.
