A millennial poll found that Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump 38 percent to 17 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson is in a close third among millennials with 11 percent.
The poll, conducted by CALinnovates, also discovered millennials’ thoughts on this presidential election.
Seventy percent of millennials intend to vote in November. Additionally, 72 percent of millennials believe that the outcome of the presidential election will have an impact on their life.
Millennials said the most important issues are improving the economy and jobs, creating equality for all Americans, making health care affordable and accessible, and preserving the environment.
“While there is a long time until election day, what this survey shows loud and clear is that millennials are engaged in the 2016 election campaign and are invested in the outcome,” Mike Montgomery, executive director of CALinnovates, told PR Newswire.
Other big issues that have been at the forefront during this election, such as national security, immigration, gun control, and preserving America as a global power, are not as important to millennials. The economy, equality, and health care, issues that directly impact young Americans, have overtaken their concerns.
CALinnovates’s poll also found that millennials are very skeptical of the media. Fifty-eight percent of millennials said they do not see the issues they care most about being represented in what the national media covers.
Despite the struggles that the millennial generation has endured with the rising cost of living, student debt, and a recession, millennials are still optimistic.
Fifty-four percent of millennials said they are “very much” or “somewhat” optimistic about their economic future, and 51 percent believe that the American Dream is still achievable.
The percentage of support received by Clinton, Trump, and Johnson suggests a tight race where young voters could shift their support. As the election draws closer, it is possible that the gaps between the candidates widen or shrink as undecided millennials decide who they intend to support.
