Mayor Bloomberg’s retirement plans: drinking a small soda on a non-smoking beach

Once his final term in office ends this month, Mayor Michael Bloomberg (D-N.Y.) is going to fulfill a lifelong dream: “enjoying a small soda on a non-smoking beach.”

The Mayor, along with comedian Jimmy Fallon, appeared on the Weekend Update portion of Saturday Night Live this week. Of course, Bloomberg’s joke referred to the legislation he passed during his tenure, which included a ban on large sugary drinks and proposal to raise the minimum smoking age from 18 to 21 years old — restrictions that earned him the nickname ‘Nanny Bloomberg.’

But the Mayor proved he could laugh at himself, turning out to be a pretty funny comedy partner for Fallon, who will take over from Jay Leno as star of NBC’s The Tonight Show. Seth Meyers, Weeked Update host, asked Bloomberg and Fallon about their upcoming post-job plans.

“I’ll be fulfilling a lifelong dream of enjoying a small soda on a non-smoking beach,” Bloomberg told Meyers, as the audience roared with laughter.

The Mayor then poked fun at his oft-mocked Spanish, saying he had also applied to teach Spanish, but was told his accent wasn’t “bueno.”

When asked about his future political aspirations, such a possibly running for president, Bloomberg responded, “Seth, I don’t know what the future holds: President, Pope, Naked Cowboy. I have lots of options.”

And as Fallon got choked up towards the end of the sketch over his departure from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon — which Meyers will host after he leaves SNL — he asked Bloomberg if he would get as emotional as he left office.

“I might,” he replied with a deadpan expression. “I’m a very emotional guy.”

Bloomberg also appeared on Late Night earlier this month to thank Fallon for bringing The Tonight Show back to New York City, as well as help write thank you notes to the many people and things for which he is grateful.
