The University of Maryland football players will sport some seriously patriotic uniforms during Saturday’s home game against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Designed by Under Armour, the Terrapins’ uniforms will be worn to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore, which took place on September 13, 1814, as part of the War of 1812.
The jersey, helmet and shoes are decorated with words from the Francis Scott Key poem “The Defence of Fort McHenry,” according to CBS Sports. Of course, Key’s poem was precisely that which inspired our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The helmets will also have images of Fort McHenry and the flag flown during the historic battle, according to the Washington Post. Instead of names on the backs of their jerseys, the players will wear the word “Triumph.”
The jersey’s aren’t quite as bold as Northwestern’s seemingly blood-spattered Wounded Warrior Project uniforms from last year, but they are sure full of “broad stripes and bright stars.”
