“Conservative. College. Caffeine.” Kent McCarty (@TheDysJunction) lives by these three words.
“The world of political punditry is dominated by adults, which gives young people the impression that politics is only for adults,” McCarty said. “Of course, those who have followed the primary election thus far know that politics isn’t just your grandfather’s game.”
McCarty said he believes the “old white guy” Republican Party is a thing of the past.
This is why McCarty, a freshman at the University of Southern Mississippi, launched his political blog The Dysfunction Junction, last September. McCarty says he called his blog The Dysfunction Junction because “the only thing more dysfunctional than my life is U.S. Politics.” Dysfunction and all, it’s where conservatism, college life, and caffeine combine to form an irresistible read.
“As I’m constantly reminded, even in at a southern university, college is a breeding ground for liberalism,” he said. “The only way we can counter this is by proudly advocating conservative ideals on campus, and the more man-power we have in the fight the better.”
He says Twitter acts as a launch pad for spreading those conservative principles.
“I like Twitter because it’s the best way for me to network with other conservatives,” McCarty said.
And Twitter could be used to fight what he says is the biggest threat to conservatism — all of the single-issue groups within the Republican Party.
“This great asset can also be our biggest detriment if we can’t unite all of the GOP sub-groups around a central message of fiscal responsibility and smaller government,” McCarty said. “Without strong party unity, we’re effectively driving our own Trojan Horse into Headquarters before allowing the Democrats to take out what’s left.”
McCarty says Republicans should be able to win the White House this year with the “ghost of Richard Nixon,” but he says the entire Party needs to be behind the GOP nominee if he is going to beat Obama.
“Any of the remaining candidates would be a better President than President Obama, but in order to get there they’ll have to have the support of the whole party and be prepared to take on the Obama machine,” he said. “If they do those things successfully, we’ll see a lot of red in November.”
Another race McCarty’s following closely: the 2048 presidential election. In fact, he’s already declared his candidacy on his blog, drawing stark differences between him and the other candidates.
