Thanks to Saturday Night Live, the world finally has the cop show it needed: Undercover Sharpton.
In recent days, it has come to light that the Reverend did some undercover work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the ’80s. There are still more questions than answers, as some sources assert that Sharpton only cooperated with the FBI after being busted on a drug deal. Whatever the circumstances, however, SNL gave the Rev. the crime show he deserves — and one that perfectly captures his personality.
“Y’all sure I should be doing this?” Sharpton, played by Kenan Thompson, asked during the opening credits of his fake show.
In this episode, the faux Reverend bumbled his way into a restaurant meetup with some New York gangsters in an attempt to capture incriminating information about them on his briefcase recording device.
“The first rule of espionage is to keep it real low-key,” Sharpton told the bartender, who’s in on the Reverend’s connection with the FBI. “That’s why I wore this floor-length leather duster and a large Cadillac medallion.”
“Your target’s at 3 o’clock,” the bartender, played by Kate McKinnon, told Sharpton, nodding her head toward the gangsters.
“Oh, well then I guess I’m way early,” Sharpton responded.
Safe to say that Sharpton was likely more of a hindrance than an asset to the FBI.
Making fun of Sharpton is a recurring theme on SNL. Back in the end of 2013, SNL spoofed the Reverend’s show on MSNBC, portraying him as someone who doesn’t understand anything. Earlier in the year, the sketch comedy show had depicted Sharpton in much the same way.
