‘Django Unchained’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ nominated for Academy Award in spite of controversies

Spike Lee’s so-called boycott of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained has officially failed.

Django Unchained is not only Tarantino’s highest grossing film yet, but is now getting a nod from the Academy.

Tarantino’s “give me a break” response to all of the criticism seems to have paid off for the filmmaker. Despite receiving flak for the film’s violence and vulgarity, the movie was still nominated for the Academy Awards’ ‘Best Picture.’

The Academy also nominated Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, even though a bipartisan group of Senators and the Current CIA director deemed it “inaccurate and misleading”.

Other contenders this year for best picture are Lincoln, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Argo, Les Miserables, Life of Pi and Silvers Linings Playbook.

But while Bigelow and Tarantino’s films made the cut, they, along with Argo‘s Ben Affleck, were surprisingly left in the dust for best director this year. Amour‘s Michael Haneke, Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Benh Zeitlin, Life of Pi’s Ang Lee, Lincoln’s Stephen Spielberg, and Silver Linings Playbook‘s David O. Russell are all in the mix for best director.

Bigelow may have been slighted this year for best director, but she did receive the award for Hurt Locker just three years ago. Tarantino was nominated for best director for Inglorious Bastards, but he still is yet to win the esteemed award.

Sorry, Tarantino, maybe next time.
