Meyers mocks why Sanders’ endorsement took so long [VIDEO]

While Bernie Sanders may have stayed in the presidential race for too long, Seth Meyers thinks it’s paid off.

There were some awkward moments when Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, but Sanders’s decision to wait was not without benefit.

Meyers said that Sanders “withholding his endorsement allowed him to press for major policy changes, and both the Democratic Party’s platform and in Hillary’s own positions, changes that could have a real impact on people’s lives.”

Sanders’s decision could be likened to basketball, Meyers explained.

“That’s right, it’s not a baseball game,” Meyers said. “It’s more like a basketball game, with one side running up the score, the other side keeping their dwindling hopes alive by stretching out the ending, and it all centers around an orange leather ball.”

“It was always, it was always pointless for the media and Democrats to obsess over exactly when Bernie was going to endorse Hillary and why he was taking so long to do it. He used his leverage to force the Democratic Party to commit to real policy changes,” Meyers said.

Those include well-known issues like free college, which Hillary previously was against, and ones not so well known, like postal banking, which would allow post offices to run basic financial services.

Meyers closed the segment by likening Sanders to someone who stays way too long at a party, but helps clean up to make the place look better than before the party began.
