The support for Rep. Paul Ryan for Speaker has been increasing. The Detroit News reported on Thursday that Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) of the Freedom Caucus has endorsed Ryan.
In previous years, Amash never voted to support Speaker John Boehner on the floor–voting for Rep. Raul Labrador in 2013 and Rep. Jim Jordan earlier this year.
The Freedom Caucus had previously endorsed Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.) for Speaker, before Ryan discussed possibly seeking the role. Ryan has laid out certain terms for him running–which include endorsements from the Freedom Caucus, the Republican Study Committee, and the Tuesday Group.
Amash’s endorsement is also noteworthy because it means that all nine House Republican members from Michigan support Ryan. As part of the Freedom Caucus, Amash and others were considered to be more resistant to a Ryan Speakership.
The Freedom Caucus granted Ryan an endorsement from 40 percent of members. They did fail to provide the 80 percent required for a formal endorsement.
Amash is considered to be more of a Libertarian member, who is popular with young voters.
