Lady Gaga and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo are joining forces to fight sexual assault on college campuses.

The pop star and the Democratic lawmaker together wrote an op-ed published in Billboard Monday that urges the passage of Cuomo’s “Enough is Enough” bill that would extend his “comprehensive sexual assault policy” to private universities in the state.

In the essay, Gaga and Cuomo claim that, in New York state, less than 5 percent of campus rapes are reported to the police and only 16 percent of sexual assault survivors get help from a victim services agency, statistics that they label “unacceptable” and “heartbreaking.”

They write:

We all have a responsibility to make sure that the strongest possible laws are in place to safeguard our students. Thankfully, New York has an opportunity to stand up for its students and take the critical steps toward facing this crisis head on. The bill currently before the New York State legislature will address the issue of sexual violence on college campuses, giving the state the nation’s strongest laws to target campus sexual assault. This is a campaign that will protect students, and it’s exactly what we need.

Gaga and Cuomo allege that the success of the legislation would turn college campuses into “safe spaces” on which students can fulfill their dreams.

“Quite simply, enough is enough,” they conclude.

In February, Cuomo introduced legislation to make his sexual assault prevention policy the law of the land on all of New York’s campuses instead of just at the 64 State University of New York (SUNY) schools.

Gaga, a New York native, revealed last year that she was a victim of sexual assault and has since been vocal on the issue.
