Apparently, Michelle Obama is allowing pancakes at the White House despite her enthusiasm for wholesome school lunches and healthy, active children.

One of the featured inventions at the White House Maker Faire on Wednesday was “PancakeBot,” a flapjack-generating machine that puts cooking breakfast from scratch to shame. Invented by Miguel Valenzuela, the original creation started from LEGOs and has since evolved into the finest in 3-D food printing.

While innovative and interesting, the machine doesn’t quite align with the first lady’s idea of a healthy meal. Many pancake recipes, like Martha Stewart’s, call for white flour, sugar, butter and oil. Suggested toppings — chocolate and maple syrups, powdered sugar and whipped cream — certainly don’t add more nutritional value. Most of IHOP’s sweet stacks weigh in at well over 600 calories.

Michelle recently criticized Republicans who want to roll back the whole grain-, fruit- and vegetable-centric school lunch program, so she would likely be upset if white flour pancakes with fudge sauce showed up on the menu.

Perhaps “PancakeBot” can do wonders with whole-wheat flour as well, although there’s no guarantee that children would eat those pancakes.
