House Speaker John Boehner stood strong in his determination to repeal Obamacare Sunday morning during an interview with Norah O’Donnell on CBS’s Face The Nation in the wake of Thursday’s Supreme Court decision upholding the law.
The Speaker said he was surprised by the verdict, and said that it is “shocking” to know that the federal government can now mandate American’s to purchase a product.
Speaker Boehner also warned of the economic impacts that the law will have on America, including increases in the cost of healthcare, which would make it “harder for small businesses to hire new workers.”
Boehner noted Obama’s hypocrisy in defending the tax provision for employers who refused to provide health insurance by calling it a fine rather than a tax.
Critics refused to believe the president in the first place, and Boehner noted that the Supreme Court had affirmed its status as a tax.
“This has to be ripped out by its roots,” Boehner said. “This is government taking over the entire health insurance industry. The American people do not want to go down this path.
“They do not want the government telling them what kind of insurance policy they have to buy and how much they’re going to pay for it and if you don’t like it, we’re going to tax you. It has to be ripped out and we need to start over. One step at a time.”
Once repealed however, Boehner said the GOP’s goal would be to implement policies that would make the health insurance industry more “patient-centered” and less costly.
