Donald Trump doubles down on comments about immigration

No amount of shaming by the media or Democrats can change Donald Trump’s opinion on the current immigrants coming to America.

Trump went on the Hugh Hewitt radio show Monday where the host played a clip of Democrat presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton asking the American people to shame Trump for his position on immigration.

“[On racism] I think we need to stand up against it,” Clinton said. “For example, a recent entry into the Republican presidential campaign said some very inflammatory things about Mexicans. Everyone should stand up and say, ‘That’s not acceptable.'”

Clinton was not-so-subtly referencing Trump’s previous comments made during his announcement. He said that some of the Mexicans immigrating to U.S. are rapists, drug dealers, and committing crimes.

“Some people thought that was a racist statement. It’s not. And I’m not talking about keeping Mexicans out. I’m talking about keeping the world out. You know, we’re like a dumping ground for the rest of the world, Hugh,” Trump said.

“And we’re not getting the finest people. We’re getting people that many other countries, including Mexico, don’t want. They’re sending them over to us because our government is so stupid and so foolishly run that we accept everybody with open arms. It’s not like the old days, so we are getting a lot of bad people coming in.”

When asked about his opinion on Clinton’s comments, Trump was unapologetic and even doubled down on his position.

“Well one, I’m honored. And two, as far as Mexico is concerned I believe strongly in a very very strong border. We have no border right now, it’s like a sieve. It’s like water pouring through. It’s ridiculous,” Trump said to Hewitt.

“I have a great relationship with Mexico,” he continued. “I have a great relationship with Mexican people, and frankly, you know, I just feel strongly that you need to have a border, and it has to be strong.”

While discussing the idea of a wall on the border, Trump took time, as he’s famous for, to boast about himself.

“I often say that nobody can build a wall like I can build a wall,” Trump continued. “I build great buildings all over the world and, frankly, nobody can build like I can build, and nobody can build a wall like I can.”

Plus, there is some truth to Trump’s immigration claims.

In an interview with PolitiFact, Tom Vinger, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, stated that since Jan. 2012, a monthly average 5,899 “foreign nationals” have been arrested in Texas. A staggering 40 percent have a criminal record from arrested previous arrests. The term “foreign nationals” includes immigrants both legally and illegally living in the U.S.

Another statistic from the DPS states that a total of 203,685 foreign-born individuals were booked into Texas county jails from October 2008 through July 1, 2014, again including both legal and illegal foreign nationals.
