Young Hillary supporters Lena Dunham and America Ferrera appeared on the DNC stage Tuesday to emphasize their support for the Democratic nominee.
Romper referred to the speech as “unsurprisingly funny,” but what was also unsurprising was Dunham’s fixation on her abortion stance and Ferrera’s praise of unauthorized immigrants.
Dunham referred to herself as “a pro-choice, feminist, sexual assault survivor with a chronic reproductive illness” and took aim at Donald Trump and the GOP for their pro-life stance.
“His rhetoric about women takes us back to a time when we were meant to be beautiful and silent,” she said about Trump.
As Heatstreet pointed out, Dunham spoke as a “sexual assault survivor,” but there was no mention of the disturbing parts of her book, Not That Kind of Girl, where she described inappropriately touching her younger sister. She also claimed to have been sexually assaulted by a man, “Barry,” at Oberlin College who happened to be a Republican in an incident which was not true.
Ferrera praised Hillary as seeing “children born into struggling families, children born to immigrant parents, children who are immigrants themselves” as an investment. “Hillary has spent the last 30 years proving what she sees in us. Not our color, gender, economic status, but our capacity to grow into thriving adults, capable of contributing great things to this country,” Ferera said.
In expressing her support for Hillary in the past, Ferrera mentioned unauthorized immigration as part of the “American dream” and why she was supporting Clinton.
The duo expressed support and excitement for “equal pay for equal work,” “the right to make decisions about your own body,” and “paid family leave.”
They also used their appearance as a pitch to send a text message to be a “card-carrying member of this team” to “forcefully reject division.”
Romper noted that the speech made the Democrats out to be the party of youth, saying that “Clinton is a millennial’s candidate too.” Dunham and Ferrera have been vocal Hillary supporters since the beginning. The campaign told The Daily Beast that Dunham “is one of the [celebrities] we’ve been in touch with the most during the campaign. She has taken on an even greater role than we had expected. It’s her part-time gig, and then some.”
Sanders still won young people though. Even with him out of the race, Hillary struggles to maintain a healthy lead over her competitors with the age group.
